Alzheimer Association

"Alzheimer Association" was established in 1999
as a nongovernmental, nonprofit organization which aim
was to improve the care and treatment of Alzheimer patients.
The development objective is to increase quality of
life of patients with Alzheimer disease and other dementias,
members of their families and caregivers.
The immediate objectives:
Raising awareness in the society of all kinds of dementia,
including Alzheimer disease, their consequences.
Building a knowledge base for Alzheimer Disease and
other dementia
Support for carers strengthens community and reduces
accidents to persons with dementia, their carers and
the public
Advocacy for dementia patients
Education of professionals and caregivers
The activities of the "AA":
To provide medical, social, nursing counseling for
dementia patients in order to provide an informational
support about Alzheimer disease and other dementias
for caregivers
To provide psychotherapy for caregivers in order to
decrease a psychological tension in the community care
To provide advocacy in cases of violations of human
rights of demented persons
To provide a research on Alzheimer disease in St. Petersburg,
North west region of Russia,
To publish manuals and recommendations for professionals
and caregivers,
To arrange for the translation of booklets, pamphlets
and other material of interest
To publish annual newsletters, articles
To sustain web-cite
To participate in radio and TV program, films
To provide conferences and seminars for students, caregivers,
medical workers, social workers in the governmental
sector
To organize an annual international conference offering
participants the possibility to inform themselves about
new findings in the fields of research on, and treatment
of the Alzheimer disease
To establish contacts with other Alzheimer help associations
"Alzheimer Association" employs 1 psychiatrist, 1
psychotherapist, 1 social worker, 1 coordinator, 1 lawyer,
experienced in medical national law, 5 medical nurses.
The personnel organisation and informational models
are based on the experience of long-established international
organisations with a similar purpose.
The unit provides outpatient consultations on the basis
of referrals and appointments. The patients and caregivers
are referred by nurses, physicians and social workers
in the reception by co-ordinator. They are referred
mainly from Geriatric Centre, but also from psychiatric
hospitals and outpatients services, from general policlinics.
The approach is individual and holistic; the content
and duration of the support varies according to individual
requirements. The informational models include individual
and group approach. The group approach is provide in
the form of popular lectures about Alzheimer Disease,
dementias, statistics, aetiology, diagnostic, treatment,
city and municipal possibilities of geropsychiatry,
legal questions, social questions, nursing care problems.
It combined with the free access to literature and edited
booklets on the relevant topics.
The treatment methods include psychotherapy (supportive
or long-term) for members of the family and caregivers.
The both individual and group psychotherapy are used
in Alzheimer Association. It provides legal consultations
to Alzheimer patients and their the representatives
if needed. This complex approach has proved an extremely
positive and effective method for treating victims of
Alzheimer disease.
"Alzheimer Association" participates in radio programs,
has its own web-cite, and publishes in newspapers, in
TV programs. It has regular schedule lectures in the
Academy of Postgraduate Education, in the department
of Nursing care . "Alzheimer Association" provides an
annual international conference on the problem of dementias
in St. Petersburg.
During the period from 1999 to 2002 a total of 1036
patients have got support from "Alzheimer Association".
